All,

Our troop is backpacking at Savage Gulf the first weekend in November
(6-8). We would like to offer a second more challenging route. To support
this, we will need at least 2 adults on each route. Adult leaders, please
let me know if you are interested in backpacking that weekend and which
route you would be ready to support.

Regular Route:
Camp at Savage Station Camp Friday at East Trailhead
Saturday Hike North Rim to Hobbs Cabin (7.5 miles + 600 ft total elevation
gain)
Return to East Trailhead on Sunday along the same route, or along the north
plateau which has a easier ground (8.75 miles + 700 ft total elevations
gain - mostly rolling hills)

Challenge Route:
Camp at Collins West Camp Friday at South Trailhead (note Collins West
because it's on the west rim of Collins Gulf and south trailhead because
that's the southern end of the park)
Saturday Hike through Collins Gulf past Sawmill Camp and back out to Hobbs
Cabin (7 miles + 1250 ft total elevation gain)
Hike to East Trailhead on Sunday.

The challenge route is similar in length and elevation gain to the Fiery
Gizzard route we had in November 2024. It is a couple miles longer, and a
couple hundred feet more of elevation gain for what we did September 2025
hiking from Stone Door to Alum Gap through the gulf. The hike up to Hobbs
Cabin is similar in difficulty to hiking *up* Stone Door, with navigating
rock formations.
