Parents,

I wanted to give you a heads up on some topics being discussed at upcoming
meetings. These will all be around the theme of appropriate scout behavior
and how to live by the scout oath and law. This shouldn't be
controversial, but it is something we could use your support and there's an
opportunity to discuss some of these topics at home. We've seen an
increase in behavior that is not appropriate for scouting events, and we
are addressing this. The below topics will be presented clearly, but also
in an age appropriate way.

We need to be clear that racist comments or hateful speech do not fit with
scout principles. These are unacceptable and inconsistent with what
Scouting stands for. We'll have an adult led lecture on this topic and how
scouts should handle this situation when they encounter it.

We will also have scouts discussing these topics using the structures
provided by the Citizenship in Society merit badge to help guide the
discussion.

With additional meetings, we will discuss the content of the Personal
Safety Awareness videos found here:
https://www.scouting.org/training/youth/scouts-bsa/
We have a lot of scouts in our troop and we won't all be best friends, but
we should all be on the same team. The online videos may have been
refreshed since you and your scout looked at these. We'll be starting with
the bullying video and go through the other Scout Rank videos. Scouts
should know how to recognize and handle bullying situations.

We will also take this opportunity to provide more structure to our outings
so that scouts know who is responsible for what tasks so that we can reduce
non-bullying conflicts that occur between scouts. This is part of helping
our scouts work together as a better team.

It is my hope that we will come away from this mentally awake and morally
straight and that we can continue to impress the importance of this.
